🏛️ The Producer

Founded in 1844 by Dr Christopher Rawson Penfold and his wife Mary at Magill Estate near Adelaide, Penfolds began by producing medicinal tonic wines. Its defining chapter came in 1951, when Max Schubert created the first experimental Grange, inspired by Bordeaux’s age-worthy reds. Despite management’s initial rejection, he later continued production in secret, laying the foundations for an Australian wine icon. Alongside Grange, the celebrated Bin series reflects Penfolds’ mastery of blending across vineyards and regions to maintain a recognisable house style, a philosophy that has since extended beyond Australia to projects in California and France.
